Perpetual Thanksgiving

IMG_7640

I am grateful for what I am and have.  My thanksgiving is perpetual.  It is surprising how contented one can be with nothing definite,–only a sense of existence.

Henry David Thoreau, letter to H.G.O. Blake, 6 December 1856

Amen and Amen. Yet, you, your art and your craft are definite things for which I am also grateful.

I think what I most admire, is your impenetrable patience. Something I can dream of.

That makes two of us! We all strive to improve, but believe me, there is plenty that still penetrates my patience in and out of the workshop. Like you, I’ll keep dreaming and working on it! Still, I appreciate your compliment.

A wonderful quote from Henry Thoreau! And a beautiful drawing of him you’ve done, too. A year ago in October, my wife and I had the great pleasure of visiting Walden Pond, outside of Concord, something I had wanted to do for more than fifty years. It was an incredibly moving experience for me, as I have read most of his works and aspire (without great success) to his philosophy of simplicity. Coincidentally, the museum in Concord was having an exhibit on Thoreau at the time of our visit, a wonderful added bonus. We found an immense maple leaf near his house site that sits on a table here in South-central Alaska as a reminder of him. Thank you, Dave, for having featured him for Thanksgiving.
